As a native Iowan I'm naturally an expert on tacos (as well as anything else I proclaim to have knowledge of). Occasionally out-of-towners, or foreigners as we call them here, will sneak into a Tasty Tacos and not like them. That's OK. It's actually part of our plan to keep them all to ourselves. You see Tasty Tacos, like Maid-Rites and breaded pork tenderloins are an acquired, delicate taste. There's something about the combination beef, whole beans, shredded cheese, hot sauce and fried that is addictive to Iowans. If you're an outsider you may never get it. No big whoop. I still don't get sweet tea, bone marrow or White Castle. In the meantime Tasty Tacos will remain another Iowa oddity that no one understands. Like Tom Arnold.

The food was just ok.. I got the original tacos. It was pretty much deep fried dough.. Kind of like Native American Fry bread. It came with beans, cheese, meat, lettuce, and tomatoes. I guess its a favorite of locals. Coming from Arizona I want that impressed. taco meat and the dough comibined were really greasy. The salsa that they supply there is ok but not real spicy. All together I guess I would go here again if there was nothing else.

So overrated it ticks me off. These are not the best tacos over. In my humble opinion, anyone who claims this place is the best is on a weird bandwagon/cult following or has never had a real taco.

Best taco in Des Moines. As one reviewer has stated Tasty Tacos has a cult following. I wasn't a true believer until someone took me to Tasty Tacos and told me to get the original flour tortilla with liberal amounts of the hot sauce. The tacos slathered in hot sauce are simply amazing. Living close to a Tasty Tacos could prove detrimental to my health as its hard to stay away when you get cravings. You haven't truly experienced Des Moines until you've had a Tasty Taco. I recommend even to the pickiest and snobiest of eaters.

Have to agree with the negative reviews on here... Came here with a friend who RAVED about the place, got pork tacos in the "soft flour" tortillas that were actually fried (although not crunchy?) and tasted like fryer fat. I ended up eating the pork without the taco shell, but it was flavorless as were the other toppings - salsa was bland, lettuce tasted old. I love me some tacos - food trucks, dive bars, from wherever - but these were by far the worst (and overpriced) that I've had!

A great central Iowa tradition. Check out the flour tacos and more. Tasty food at a great price. Lines can get a bit long if you hit the lunch crowd at just the wrong moment. Will definitely go back!

I was first introduced to Tasty Tacos when I came to Des Moines a few years back and now am a regular customer. Their tacos taste different from anywhere else I've been in my life, they taste REAL. Their flour tacos and nachos are the staple items, must try! Their decor is order at the counter from an old school looking menu, which is interesting. The whole feel with the restaurant is like a family run place. They have expanded so much I think they are available to everyone in the area. One thing I learned is that their burritos are very small...order a lot if you plan to get full. Their sides are tasty as well. Staff is friendly, but you won't really interact with them. This place is just as good as the others!

I had two chicken tacos, a side of refried beans and rice which came out to $10.49. I thought it was a little pricey for fast food but all in all it was worth it. I do think that the shells could have used more flavor.

I LOVE Tasty Tacos, always have and always will. This place is pure nostalgia for me. I have been going to Tasties since I was a kid and love it each time I go! I only ever get the original taco, sometimes I can manage two but these suckers are dense. They are the puffy tacos so a deep fried shell that is so delish! The nachos are also the puffy shells - nom nom nom. Hot sauce is also really tasty ;-) Don't go here if you are looking for really good Mexican food, for that go to Los Lorales. This place is more novelty. I love it, you will too, just go and enjoy it!

Our second attempt to satisfy my taco craving was here, as Tasty Tacos is a chain of restaurants out here that appears to be pretty successful. I won't bother trying them again. The Place: Standard fast-food Mexican place, like Taco Bell or the Green Burrito. The Food: Fresh but nothing stood out, other than how thin the corn shells are, so that I ended up with a taco salad instead of two tacos. They do serve both beef and chicken. The Price: Cheap

Simple, fried, fast. Not the healthiest selection, but they do it well every time. The fried tortilla of their tacos makes a big step up from a humble standard taco. The chicken tacos are pretty good, but the 'original' (ground beef, seasoning, and whole beans) is really hard to beat. The guy at the register is sharp as a whip and has a great radio voice. The appeal to this place is so strong you'll find construction workers passing salsa bottles over to suited businessmen in ties.

Welcome to non flavor town. I had the flour taco and the filling tasted like day(or 7 day) old greasy slop. A lot of my friends rave about this place. Maybe i need new friends. My daughter doesnt like beans so i got her a "steak" taco. Is water a seasoning in Mexico? Needless to say she hated it. I took a bite and the trash can finished the rest. Fried tacos are awesome if made right and to do that u need to place at least a tiny bit of effort into production. Ib summation if you want mexican hit a taco truck. If you want over priced and over hyped hit tastys

Based on these reviews, Iowans do not know their mexican food. I am not writing or saying this to be rude, but for someone visiting Iowa from the Southwest, please avoid this place unless you want to be disappointed. The nachos had canned cheese on them. Canned cheese. I had a pubs (hoping it was a beard or arm hair) in my cheese, no joke. Flukes happen, but the food already wasn't good enough for me to want to finish it. Their ground beef feels and tastes like it is made up of 50% lard, and their vegetable toppings are lacking in quality and quantity. I don't grab a taco or nachos thinking I am going to get health food, but most Mexican joints I have frequented can be considered healthfood compared to this place. We tried other locations too, including the newest one in Ankeney, and they were basically the same. If you are into this type of food, that's fine, but it is a crime to call it Mexican, because it really is not.

I had the Basic chicken taco and some retried beans. FAST. Delicious. Love the fry bread shell.

I love it here! I fly in from Vegas every few years to see my family, and I make sure that they take me to this little joint! Can't wait to come back!!

I have to say that I can not understand the hype of Tasty Tacos. My boyfriend and son raved how good they are. We went one evening, I was not impressed and did not feel so good after. I wonder, who fries a flour tortilla and to make a taco shell?

My mouth waters just thinking about Tasty Tacos...it's been too long since I've had this delicious treat! I love this place and many other people do too. The shell isn't a typical Mexican-style but it's crunchy and still very delicious. They're nachos are also super delightful. If you're in Des Moines you must stop in at one of their locations and see what the fuss is all about.

Always eat their original flour tacos. Love the flour shell, the beans, the meat, the cheese ... even the grease...yes, we love the entire TACO!!! We have been eating here for twenty-five years or longer and as far as Taco's go in Des Moines they can't be beat. We always grab a few to chow on when we are back home.

Due to Yelp reviews, I was under the impresion that is the best Des Moines had to offer for lunch options. If it is, I'm very sad for Des Moines. I got the original, because it's what's recommended. It was just alright. I wasn't a big fan of the deep fried taco shell aka chalupa shell. It wasn't overly greasy or sloppy, but I just found it all very flavorless. I also got some fried stuffed jalapenos, which were great, but straight from the freezer as expected. The interior is remeniscent of a "town house of pizze" type place. pretty run down with no real decor other than the front counter and some of those two in one benches + tables. Overall I was underwhelmed by the hype, but I do agree that this place is a different kind of taco joint and I have to give it props for originality in the tacos.

Cheap, clean, several good locations through town, quick and good service, and best of all it's delicious! Huge menu to pick from with lots of good option for picky eaters or kids. The flour tacos are the best!

The deep fried taco shells are what makes this place stand out!!!! The beef and chicken tacos are excellent and their salsa is yummy too!!!! Enjoy, you will not be disappointed!

I've been here a few times and thought it was OK. But last night I was starving and could barely get through the two steak tacos I ordered. Incredibly dry beef was the problem. Had to soak em in hot sauce to make them edible. And I do wish they would jazz up their ingredients, just a little. Maybe use real Mexican cheese instead of processed cheddar.

Tasty Tacos, one of the Locally Owned Mexican Restiurats here in the DSM Metro. This time around it was the Original Tacos, Chicken Tacos and Flour nachos. Always good and the quality never suffers

Being new to Iowa, I was under the impression that Tasty Taco's was one of the best places to get some Mexican grub. Jeez, what a disappointment. I probably had better tacos at Taco Bell. This place is a fast food joint that deep fry's just about everything to make it taste halfway decent. To sum this review up I feel like Henry Hill from the last scene in Goodfella's. "People ask me if they have good Mexican food in Iowa, I tell them I ordered a steak taco and I got ground beef on an over fried flour tortilla covered in processed cheese".

  • Janet E.

This is the first flour taco shell that had the texture of a pita bread that I had ever tried. To add to it, the shell was fried!!!! This is another example of how anything fried must be good. i ordered the original and the steak tacos. The original was definitely my favorite. The spices they put in that ground beef tasted great! The steak was a lot more bland without the spices. I attempted to go again on Sunday but they were closed!!! We ordered the food and it was ready in less than 5 minutes! Super fast and friendly service!

This is a good place to grab a good a taco. There are only a few good things to eat here so, I would recommend the flour original taco and flour nachos. The flour original taco comes with your typical ingredients; lettuce, cheese, taco meat, and a small amount of beans. The taco has a good amount of flavor and I would recommend using their hot salsa. The hot salsa is not too hot but as a good taste to it that you're not going to get anywhere else. The flour nachos are a one of a kind. If you get two Original tacos and a flour nacho you will not walk away on a empty stomach or disappointed. Outside of what I recommend for food choices I was highly disappointed with the other food but I keep returning to Tasty Tacos for their flour tacos and flour nachos.

So this place is an easy pick near Grand & 14th street near the State Capitol. Parking is plentiful and the restaurant has sit down seating too. The Flour Tacos are amazing. These folks know how to make a scrumptious original that will make you come back again and again. The food is fresh. Get it while it is hot!

Was in town for meetings and someone from back East told me this was a good spot to get some tasty food. It's quite a trek from downtown so we jumped in a taxi and headed here for lunch. The place was buzzing, very popular but the service was super quick so no issue. I got a soft flour flour taco...the classic...with beef and cheese etc. It was very good indeed. I never had one of these soft tacos but I'm a convert. I also had the jalapeno poppers which were great ... even if they are straight from the freezer. I don't care. My colleague had a burrito...even though I told him he HAD to get a taco. He seemed under-impressed, but he's a hard guy to please :-) Would return for sure. Warning for out of towners...getting a taxi in Des Moines is next to impossible. So do we what we did and use your hotel shuttle to drive you around.

I expected better based on some reviews and from some people at work so it didn't live up to its hype for me. It was much better then taco bell though and I thought fairly cheap: 1 enchilada, burrito, taco, and soda for 9.85 I think.

We crave TT but rarely make it there since they're not open on Sundays :( and we live 75 miles away. The original tacos are THE best!

Tasty Tacos is the best!!! I crave TT. We stop in on the way into town from Chicago. Flour taco and cheese enchilada are my faves. The cheese enchilada is so simple and so cheesy, topped with their nicely spicy hot sauce, YUM!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
